A routine dental check-up allows issues to be identified before they become more complex. Many problems, including early cavities, gum inflammation, and changes in the supporting bone, cause no noticeable symptoms until they have progressed significantly. Regular check-ups are the most reliable way to stay ahead of these changes. For new patients, our Wellness Package includes consultation, scaling and polishing, and fluoride treatment for $119 inclusive of GST.

What happens during a routine dental check-up?
A standard check-up at Penn Pacific Dental Center covers several things in a single appointment. The aim is to give a complete picture of the current state of the teeth, gums, and supporting structures.
Discussion and medical history review
The appointment begins with a discussion of any concerns you may have noticed since your last visit. Medical history is reviewed at each visit, as systemic conditions and medications can affect oral health. This is also a good time to ask about anything you have been wondering about, whether whitening, existing restorations, or anything else.
Clinical examination
The dentist examines the teeth, gums, soft tissues, and bite. This includes checking for signs of decay, gum inflammation or recession, cracks, wear, and the condition of any existing fillings or crowns. The examination also screens for any changes in the soft tissues of the mouth.

X-rays
X-rays are taken as clinically indicated. They allow the dentist to see what is not visible during a clinical examination, including cavities between teeth, changes in the bone supporting the roots, and the condition of existing restorations beneath the surface. See the section below for more on the types of X-rays used.
Professional scaling and polishing
A professional scaling and polishing removes plaque and hardened tartar from areas that daily brushing and flossing miss. Scaling removes deposits above and slightly below the gumline, and polishing smooths the tooth surfaces. This is included as part of our Wellness Package, which covers a consultation, scaling and polishing, and fluoride treatment for $119 inclusive of GST.
Fluoride treatment
A fluoride application may be recommended at the end of the appointment to help strengthen enamel. It is advisable to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application to allow the fluoride to remain on the teeth for the recommended period.
Discussion and next steps
Any findings are explained clearly at the end of the appointment. If treatment is needed, options are discussed before anything is planned. A recall interval is recommended based on your individual situation, typically every six months for most patients.
Why do regular check-ups matter?
Most dental problems develop gradually and silently. By the time a patient notices pain or a visible change, the condition has usually progressed beyond its earliest stage. Regular check-ups allow problems to be identified and managed while they are still straightforward to treat.
Early detection keeps treatment simpler
A small cavity detected at a check-up can be restored with a simple filling. Left undetected, the same cavity may eventually reach the nerve and require root canal treatment or lead to an abscess. Catching problems early keeps the treatment more straightforward and less costly.
Gum disease often has no early symptoms
Bleeding gums and gum disease frequently develop without pain. A check-up may include periodontal charting, which measures gum health around each tooth and helps identify gum inflammation and bone changes early.
Monitoring existing restorations

Common questions about dental check-ups in Singapore
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Most patients benefit from a check-up every four to six months. Some patients with higher risk of decay or active gum disease may benefit from more frequent visits. The appropriate interval is discussed at your appointment based on your individual oral health.
What is included in the Wellness Package?
The Wellness Package at Penn Pacific Dental Center is $119 inclusive of GST and includes a consultation, scaling and polishing, and fluoride treatment. It is designed for patients attending for a routine check-up and clean. Book online or WhatsApp us to arrange an appointment.
How often do I need dental X-rays?
Bitewing X-rays are typically recommended every six to twelve months to check for cavities between teeth. An OPG providing a full-mouth overview is recommended every two to three years. The frequency may vary depending on your individual oral health history and risk factors.
Are professional cleanings painful?
Professional cleaning is generally comfortable. Some sensitivity may occur if there is existing gum inflammation or a build-up of tartar near the gumline. This usually settles quickly after the appointment. Patients with significant sensitivity are welcome to let us know before the appointment.
Can I discuss other concerns during my check-up?
Yes. A check-up appointment is a good opportunity to ask about anything you have noticed or been wondering about, whether sensitivity, a filling that feels different, whitening options, or anything else. The dentist will address each concern and explain the options.
